Chris Davidson, a noted surfer, died on September 24, 2022, at the age of 45, after getting involved in a scuffle outside a bar on the north coast of New South Wales. Kelly Slater, Davidson’s longtime opponent, paid tribute to him in an Instagram story, writing:
“Yesterday another soldier was killed. #RipChrisDavo. I’ve had several fun fights with this guy. One of the most naturally gifted surfers I have ever met.”
When tweeting about Chris’s death, Mark Windon, Executive Director of Surfing NSW, described him as a “larger-than-life figure”.

Chris Davidson was killed after allegedly being attacked in a country pub in New South Wales, Australia. On September 24, at about 11 p.m., Davidson got into an argument with a man named Hrant Coleman, after which Davidson collapsed and injured his head on the concrete. Police responded to a complaint from the Sportsman’s Way bar in South West Rocks and when they arrived, Davidson was lying unconscious on the floor. Paramedics arrived in an ambulance and took Chris to a local hospital, where he died shortly after.
Coleman was arrested early Sunday morning at his home in South West Rocks. According to the Daily Telegraph, Grant is the brother of NSW Waratah head coach Darren Coleman. The 42-year-old is suspected of causing death by violence. On the same day, he appeared at the Port Macquarie Bail Court and was denied bail.

Each website lists a different date of birth for Chris Davidson. Some people claimed 1976 while others claimed 1977. In the early 1990s, he was a member of the Rip Curl Search crew, and Tracks surf magazine labeled him one of the world’s foremost surfers at the time.
He started his career at the age of 19 and received a wildcard to the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. Davidson had previously beaten Kelly Slater in the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Portugal, and that year he was rated 14th in the world for surfing. Then he stopped surfing professionally.
He has represented Australia in a number of international competitions, including the 2009 Billabong Pro in Spain. He reached the final, but lost. At a young age, Davidson was associated with the Rip Curl Search crew, where he made several free surf movies with his friend Mick Fanning.
