Bobbi Kristina’s autopsy reveals she died from a combination of drugs and drowning

The Fulton County medical examiner said Friday that Bobbi Kristina Brown died of drowning and a drug overdose. A toxicology study found marijuana, alcohol, “a cocaine-related substance”, sedative and anti-anxiety drugs and morphine in her system.

Prior to the full release of the autopsy, the Atlanta medical examiner’s office noted that toxicology tests failed to verify whether the morphine was the product of heroin use. Brown’s family released a statement on her 23rd birthday detailing her health on that day she was found unconscious in the bathtub on January 21, 2015. (Between admissions to the hospital, a rehabilitation center, and hospice care, Brown finally died on July 26.)

Medical records, investigative files and other materials were used to determine how Brown diedofficials said. “The underlying cause of death is the condition that initiates the downward cycle leading to death and in this case the submersion is associated with drug intoxication,” the medical examiner’s office said in the statement. “The pneumonia and encephalopathy are more direct causes resulting from the immersion and drug intoxication.”

However, the coroner’s office was unable to determine whether Brown’s death was accidental or intentional (such as a suicide or murder). Although it was previously reported that “no significant injuriesat the time of her “unnatural death”, this information was kept secret under a court order.

The medical examiner’s office said in July that the time lag between the January incident and Brown’s death in July would complicate the reconstruction of the events surrounding her initial inability to respond. Interpretation of autopsy findings and other information will also be challenging. However, an autopsy may be helpful in answering questions that may arise about the cause of her unresponsiveness and eventual death.”

Her 20-year-old boyfriend, Nick Gordon, was raised as Brown’s son by her late mother Whitney Houston but was never formally adopted by the family. Claims that Gordon “injected her with a dangerous concoctionand that Brown “died as a result of a violent altercation with the defendant (Gordon)” are categorically contested by Gordon’s legal team in a wrongful death complaint.

Gordon’s lawyer states in a letter to PEOPLE last month that his client was “dehumanized by the fictitious accusations” and continued to “mourning privately”. Gordon wrote, “Happy Birthday Girl!!” on Facebook on Friday, the day before what would have been Brown’s 23rd birthday.

In an interview with PEOPLE published in February, Brown’s best friend and former roommate Mason Whitaker lamented the loss of the late Houston and Bobby Brown’s only child.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t think of her and the amazing influence she had on my life.” Whitaker said after the one-year anniversary of her near-drowning. “Her vibrant spirit will live on forever. It kills me to think the world won’t be able to experience the wonderful person she was.
