The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has said it is “undertaking a review of campaign protocols” to ensure none of the rules were broken after Andrea Riseborough received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role in the underrated film To Leslie.
“It is the goal of the Academy to ensure that the Awards competition is conducted fairly and ethically, and we are committed to an inclusive awards process,” the statement read.
“We are reviewing the campaign procedures surrounding this year’s nominees to ensure no guidelines were violated and to inform us if changes to the guidelines may be necessary in a new era of social media and digital communications . We are confident in the integrity of our nomination and voting processes and support sincere grassroots campaigns for outstanding performance.”
After several days of intense social media Riseborough, campaigned by celebrities like Edward Norton, Gwyneth Paltrow and even fellow Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett, received an unexpected nomination, likely at the expense of those for women of color like The Woman King’s Viola Davis and Till’s Danielle Deadwyler .

According to VarietyAcademy member and Riseborough supporter Frances Fisher may have broken the rules when she identified Viola Davis, Michelle Yeoh, Adam Deadwyler and Cate Blanchett as potential rivals in an Instagram post.
An official complaint about Fisher’s position could lead to a one-year suspension from the Academy, although this is unlikely to affect Riseborough’s chances of being elected. In the 89-year history of the Academy Awards, only nine nominations have been officially withdrawn.
