Every entrepreneur is different. We have different experiences, interests and temperaments, but there are certain traits that are common to those who succeed, and these can be studied and learned.
Through my experiences as a serial entrepreneur and investor in various companies in various industries and building brands such as 1 People, I have heard that there is a step-by-step plan for successful business.
Successful entrepreneurs like Mark Cuban, Grant Cardone and Ryan Moran all talk about certain traits and mindsets that must be acquired before success is possible. In his book 12 months to 1 millionMoran details some of these traits and entrepreneurial approaches needed to succeed in a highly competitive environment.
Based on my own journey, which has included many ups and downs, I agree with this idea. However, in my experience, one of the biggest obstacles to success is not a highly competitive market, but yourself. When you overcome the emotional and mental obstacles that stand between you and the goals you want to achieve, there is nothing that can stop you from reaching those goals.
Here are nine essentials to lead your business to success:
Contents
1. Have the “never stop learning” mindset.
Your first and biggest investment should be in yourself. All the successful people I’ve met around the world have deeply rooted this approach. They focus on growing their mindset, knowledge and experience. Make it a habit to read at least two books a month. Learning and growing are key.
2. Never stop trying.
Failures and mistakes are important for success. I stopped counting my mistakes and failures years ago, not because I couldn’t learn from them, but because there were so many of them. It’s not the failures and mistakes that define you, but how you respond to them. Do you learn from them? Will you do something different next time? Are you trying harder? Or do you stop trying altogether? Never stop trying and never be afraid to make mistakes or fail in your attempt to achieve your goals.
3. Build a network.
Get in the habit of hanging out with people who have already achieved what you want to achieve. This is where you learn the most because your personality, your language and your mentality can take the shape of your surrounding community.
This is a golden rule of life and relationships. Depending on the level of ambition you have, you may have to change communities several times during your lifetime. This includes avoiding the naysayers that can become a wall between you and your goals. Remember that life is energy, you are energy, but you are also affected by other people’s energy, which is why your relationships are extremely important.
4. Work hard and continuously.
This is a given for most high achievers, but it is not a given for most people. Some of the foundations of hard work are focus, sacrifice and perseverance. But there is also simple math in the equation. If you’re willing to work hard for a long time, it’s quite logical that you outperform and outperform most others. Not that this is a zero sum game, because it isn’t, but if you put in the effort for a long time, the universe can respond positively and “give” you what you strive for. This is also why you have to be passionate otherwise it will be difficult to maintain your drive for the whole distance.
5. Sacrifice what cannot stand.
Be willing to sacrifice the traits and habits within yourself, and those things in the world around you, that do not support your success journey. This can even be people and material things, such as a nice car, a big house or an expensive watch. You work blind because you never know if all your efforts and sacrifices will eventually lead to success. It takes faith, focus, and a willingness to put aside things that can’t stand the process.
6. Take risks.
Sacrificing so much for your goals is a risky undertaking. Developing something that has no guarantee of success is a risky undertaking. Moving forward in unfamiliar territory is a risky undertaking. Risk should not be something that holds you back.
7. Take leadership.
Take charge of your life, your direction and the people who help you make your business a success. Leadership is not about being bossy, it’s about serving the people you lead. Serving means focusing on how you can help others grow personally and professionally. Taking leadership also means taking responsibility for all mistakes and letting your team win.
8. Learn the rules of scaling.
Success can be achieved in business by knowing how to scale what you already know and have achieved. It starts with knowing your goals very precisely and the ability to determine a strategy that makes your goals achievable. This means having a plan that builds the roadmap step by step, unfolds your strategy, and has the ability to execute that plan every day until your goal is reached.
9. Think about your goal.
Have a bigger goal than just money. Something that can keep you afloat even when it’s hard because it will be. Mine is changing the way business is done, which to me means companies changing to have a stronger focus on social and sustainable impact in the world and thereby becoming a force for positive change.
These nine essentials can be a starting point to think about how to integrate the mindset and develop the traits that will support your success journey as an entrepreneur. Good luck on your journey.
