Jim Parsons says he has “awakened” in recent years about how much he loves “putting myself to work” portraying LGTBQ+ characters.

Parsons, 49, said “the majority” of the roles he’s been offered are for gay characters during an interview with Variety for the publications’ Just for Variety podcast on Wednesday.

“I wouldn’t necessarily call it a lot of LGBTQ+ content, but there are a lot of gay characters I’m offered,” Parsons said when asked what kind of scripts he sent. “The majority, I would say, that is offered to me is gay.”

“They are such rich characters and in such interesting storylines that waking me up from how much I love an actor – and, if I may say, artist – put myself to work,” Parsons said about these roles.

Elsewhere during the interview Parsons noted that he “grew up in a time when the first thing I think of every time” on the topic of being openly gay in Hollywood” is when Ellen [DeGeneres] game out.”

“It was so exciting. As much as it helped in the end, it was also f—— scary as a gay who… wanted a career for himself, on the same path, in the same industry,” the actor added. “So it’s been a long time .”
