After an emotional argument with his mother, Budden entered rehab alone on July 3, 1997. This was in exchange for his mother letting him go to his prom. Budden dropped out of high school and by the time he was 20 had a child with a woman older than him.

With the birth of his son approaching, Budden began to take his music more seriously. In 2001, he joined forces with producer Dub-B, also known as White Boy, and began releasing his first mixtapes and demos.

One of them ended up in the hands of DJ Clue, who was the host of Hot 97 and the head of Desert Storm Records.
